WILNA
3 mi. n. of Elkton

William Whann Mackall, born in Washington, D. C. January 18, 1817, lived at Wilna from around age six until he left home for the United States Military Academy. After graduation at West Point in the class of 1837, he fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. In 1861 he resigned from the United States Army to join the Confederate Army. He was given the rank of lieutenant colonel and a post on the staff of Maj. Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, C.S.A. He was promoted to brigadier general as of Feb. 27, 1862. Captured at Island No. 10 in April, 1862, Gen. Mackall was exchanged in time for him to serve on the staff of his classmate, Braxton Bragg. Relieved at his own request following the Battle of Chickamauga, Gen. Mackall served on the staff of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston during the Georgia campaign of the latter. Gen. Mackall surrendered at Macon Ga., on April 20, 1865.
After the war Gen. Mackall lived in Fairfax County, Va. He died Aug. 12, 1891, at his farm "Langley" and was buried at Lewinsville, near McLean, Va.
The house at "Wilna" stands today three miles north of Elkton on Blue Ball Road.
