CONOWINGO BRIDGE
Susquehanna River, US 1
Two miles upstream from the Conowingo Dam crossing the Susquehanna River there stood, during the Civil War, a long wooden covered bridge. An important link between Maryland and the states to the north, this bridge was closely guarded. Part of the flooring was removed to prevent unwanted passage on this bridge. A small guard post was maintained on the south bank of the river for the protection of the bridge.
