Gilpin Family Papers

Inclusive dates:  1673-1976                      Predominant dates:  1777-1940

Biographical/historical background:

The earliest documents in the Gilpin Family papers pertain to Col. Henry Hollingsworth (1737-1830), a prominent Cecil Countian who served as a commissary during the American Revolution.  His daughter, Mary (1771-1850), married John Gilpin (1765-1808), the son of another leading family.  Other 18th and early 19th-century documents relate to families the Hollingsworths and Gilpins married, including the Hendersons and Partridges.  This explains the naming of the Gilpin family home in Elkton, Partridge Hill.  Joseph Gilpin, the first Gilpin to arrive in Cecil County, built Gilpin Manor near the Head of the Elk River, which remained the family home for many years after it passed to his son John and his wife Mary Hollingsworth Gilpin.

The family maintained a level of wealth and status through the 1800s through their landsholdings, businesses and professional occupations.  Records from the 1800s and later pertain to the descendants John and Mary Gilpin’s son, Henry H. Gilpin and his children with Margaret Ricketts.  These children included:  William R. Gilpin (1834-1917), John Gilpin (1838-1913), Margaret A. Gilpin (1843-1923), Thomas H. Gilpin ( 1847-1908), Charles Gilpin (1856-1912), and David Gilpin (?-1913).  The family continued to maintain a home in Elkton, but had close business and family ties to Philadelphia.  The papers continue with the children of William R. Gilpin and Anna E. Engle:  Elva Gilpin (1866-?), William P. Gilpin (1869-?), Frederick S. Gilpin (?-1927), Helen Gilpin (?-1924) and Malcolm R. Gilpin.  Elva Gilpin married George F. Denney, who died at a young age in 1903.  Their only child, Anna Gilpin Denney, never married and is responsible for preserving the family papers.

Scope and content:

The scope of this collection is wide-ranging.  The first portion of the collection includes correspondence and records pertaining to the family of Col. Henry Hollingsworth, including copies of Revolutionary War-era letters, records of land transactions and recipes/household hints.  A number of plats of early roads can be found, along with numerous surveys and deeds dating to the late 1700s to mid-1800s.  Many of the other documents from this era relate to Gilpin family land transactions.  Worthy of note are a number of receipts belonging to Henry H. Gilpin (1804-1857), who was also a member of the Elkton Debating Society, which kept minutes from 1829 to 1838.  The letter book of shipping merchants Briscoe and Partridge contains details of the merchant trade in the early 1800s

A large number of items pertain to William R. Gilpin, who operated several businesses in Philadelphia in Elkton.  These documents include personal and business correspondence, financial records, and a diary.  There are also account books, receipts and correspondence relating to William R. Gilpin’s service as Elkton Town Treasurer.  Records of various Gilpin estates, especially William R. Gilpin’s siblings and children, are also among the papers.

Documents relating to John Gilpin (1843-1913) are worthy of note because Gilpin served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and later owned a brickyard in Elkton.  The correspondence of Hannah LeDuc (sister-in-law of William R. Gilpin) from the same era sheds light on social life and the role of women.  In the 1890s, a large number of letters and invitation sent to Frederick S. Gilpin (?-1927) shed light on Cecil County society.  William P. Gilpin sent  letters and postcards to family members during his trips to Europe, including one on the heels of the sinking of Titanic.

Elva Gilpin Denney’s papers contain correspondence and financial records around the time of the early death of her husband, George Denney.  Elva Denney became involved with Elkton Presbyterian Church and Elkton Missionary Society, and records and publications of these organizations can be found.  Elva Denney also kept a diary in 1896 and 1900.

A significant amount of genealogical information is contained in books, charts, biographies and letters.  Helen A. Gilpin wrote a number of essays on Cecil County history and may have also collected some of the publications relating to local, regional and state history.  There are many photographs in the collection, presumably of the Gilpin family, but the vast majority of these are unidentified.

Describe preservation procedures:

Documents have been stored in acid-free, lignin-free manuscript folders with a calcium carbonate buffer.  When necessary, multi-page and highly acidic materials have been separated from other items with a folder insert made of similar material in lighter weight stock.  Folders were then placed in lignin-free boxes with metal edge construction made from 60-pt board with a calcium carbonate buffer.

No repairs to documents were made; fragile items were placed in polypropelene sleeves for protection and reference copies made to reduce handling.  Paper clips were removed, but envelopes were attached to letters with plastic clips.  Large documents were placed in custom folders in an oversized box, along with three rolled genealogical charts which were tied with linen tape.

Most photographs were placed in polypropelene sleeves, although framed tintypes and photos not easily removed from frames remain in these enclosures.

Books and ledgers were placed on their spine in document boxes; one oversized ledger required a custom box.
